After the wedding

Do you have to change your name when you marry in Ireland?

By Weddingz ·

The short version

  • You do not have to change your name when you marry.
  • If you do, you do not need a deed poll.
  • Most organisations accept your marriage certificate as proof.
  • There is no single form. You tell each organisation yourself.

People expect an office somewhere that changes your name. There isn't one. Irish law does not set out how a name is changed: you earn a name by "use and repute", which means you start using it and ask others to. The work is in getting your documents to match.

Do you have to?

No. Keeping your name, taking your spouse's, or using one at work and one at home are all open to you. Nothing changes automatically on the day, and there is no deadline to decide.

What you need as proof

Your marriage certificate. Most organisations will accept it as proof of the change, so a deed poll is not needed for a name taken on marriage.

The certificate comes after registration. You cannot get a marriage certificate until the marriage is registered. After a civil ceremony the registrar does that for you. After a religious or secular ceremony you must return the signed Marriage Registration Form to a Registrar within 1 month. Ask each organisation whether it needs an original certificate or a copy before you order.

Who to tell

Every organisation has its own requirements, and the order matters: certificate first, then photo identification, then everyone who asks to see that identification. Our name change checklist builds the list for you from what you have, marks the steps with an official rule, and writes a letter you can send to the rest.

Double-barrelled and other new surnames

Citizens Information says only that most organisations accept a marriage certificate when you change your name on marrying. If the name you want is not simply your spouse's surname, ask the passport service and your bank what they will accept before you assume. A deed poll is the fallback: a signed legal statement that you have given up the old name and taken the new one.

Changing it back

You can return to your earlier name after a separation or divorce. You contact each organisation again, usually with identification and evidence of the previous name, and sometimes a certified copy of the separation agreement or divorce decree.
