Two dates people ask about
St Valentine's Day, 14 February, is only the 167th most popular date, with about 55 marriages a year. The day before St Patrick's Day, 16 March, does far better: 37th, with about 90.
What this means for your date
A popular date is popular with venues, photographers and bands too. If yours is near the top of the list, book the venue and the people who can only do one wedding a day first.
A quiet date can work in your favour. Suppliers have more free days in January and February, and it is worth asking a venue what it offers midweek or out of season.
Whatever the date, the legal notice is the same: three months to the Registrar. The planning checklist works out that deadline, and the rest, from your date.
About the figures
Source: Central Statistics Office, table VSA113: Marriages Dates from 2011, published 9 March 2026 and reused under the CC BY 4.0 licence. See also the CSO press statement. Each figure is the average number of marriages registered on that calendar date across 2011 to 2024. Dates with the same average share a rank. Because the figures are by date and not by day of the week, they don't show that a date is busier in years when it lands on a weekend.
