Castle wedding venues in Ireland

Turrets, staircases and a lot of history in the photos.

castle · hotel

Abbeyglen Castle Hotel

A castle hotel above Clifden at the far end of the Sky Road, complete with helipad and resident parrot. Eccentric, warm and about as far west as an Irish wedding gets.

Mayo

castle

Ashford Castle

The one on every Irish wedding moodboard. An 800-year-old castle on Lough Corrib where the day comes with falconry, boat arrivals and staff who appear before you know you need them. If the budget stretches, nowhere in the west touches it.

Galway

castle

Ballynahinch Castle

A castle on 700 acres of Connemara wilderness, with the Twelve Bens behind it and a salmon river below the windows. Weddings here feel like a house party in the best house in the west.

Kerry

castle

Ballyseede Castle

Kerry's only castle hotel, on 30 acres outside Tralee, family-run with wolfhounds on the lawn. Small enough that the castle is yours for the day, which is rather the point of a castle.

Mayo

castle

Belleek Castle

A candle-lit castle in woodland outside Ballina, full of dark wood, armour and stories. Smaller and stranger than the big estates, in the best way. Couples who find hotel ballrooms beige book here.

Ruins of Castlemartyr Castle in the parkland at Castlemartyr

Cork

castle · hotel

Castlemartyr Resort

A 17th-century manor beside the ruin of an 800-year-old castle, twenty minutes east of the city. Golf for one side of the family, a spa for the other, and grounds that swallow a drinks reception whole.

Dublin

castle · hotel

Clontarf Castle Hotel

An actual castle fifteen minutes from the city centre, which sounds impossible until you drive up to it. Medieval walls outside, plush modern hotel inside, and a banquet hall that makes speeches feel like a state occasion.

Clare

castle

Dromoland Castle

The ancestral castle of the O'Briens on 450 acres, with falconry, a walled garden and five-star everything. If you've pictured getting married at an Irish castle, this is probably the picture.

Meath

Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa

A 1764 Georgian mansion on 21 acres of lawns, eighteen kilometres from Dublin city centre, which makes it the closest thing to a country estate the capital's guest list can taxi home from. Takes up to 350.

Clare

Gregans Castle Hotel

A 1750 country house at the foot of Corkscrew Hill with the Burren rolling away to Galway Bay. Exclusive use for up to 70 guests, food with a Michelin Key reputation, and no castle despite the name. Nobody who books it minds.

Meath

castle

Killeen Castle

A Norman castle on a 600-acre estate at Dunsany, with weddings for up to 160, lodge accommodation and a Jack Nicklaus course that hosted the Solheim Cup. The castle looming over the photographs is the whole argument.

Mayo

The Lodge at Ashford Castle

Ashford's smaller sibling next door, on the same lake with the same views, minus the castle price tag. Suits couples who want the estate without the formality, and the boathouse ceremony room is quietly the best in Mayo.
